To Heal Diabetes, Doctors Push Weight-Loss Surgery

August 2007

Doctors who have turned surgery into a popular treatment for obesity are setting new sights on a burgeoning new market: diabetes patients.

Diabetes cure with Duodenal Switch

Feburary 2007

Obesity is the leading cause of Type II diabetes mellitus (adult onset diabetes) in the United States . With sufficient weight loss, diabetes will in most cases improve or resolve. Walter Poires, M.D. published in 2004 a study outlining the improvement in Type II diabetes after Roux-En-Y gastric bypass. Since we began performing the Duodenal Switch (DS) in 1993, we have observed that the majority of our patients following their DS for their morbid obesity have had their diabetes cured immediately following the surgery.

Pacific Laparoscopy Patient Featured in Ventura Star

January 2002:
On Sunday, January 13, 2002, the Ventura Star featured an article on one of Dr. Robert Rabkin’s postoperative patients, who, at that time, had lost 250 lbs. as a result of having the Duodenal Switch Procedure. Prior to surgery, this patient weighed 530lbs, experienced physical and emotional pain, faced physical and social limitations, and suffered from discrimination. He decided to have surgery after attending a Pacific Laparoscopy support group meeting in Ventura. He “was more concerned about the risks posed by his extreme obesity” than he was about having surgery. He traveled to San Francisco to have surgery. He experienced anticipation as his appointment for surgery approached. With the support of his family and the Pacific Laparoscopy medical team, he followed through with surgery, and has enjoyed postoperative success. He noted that he now rides his bike, mows his lawn, and is able to sit in the movie theatre. “This is my second chance,” the patient said.

Drs. Robert and John Rabkin have been featured in the following TV news stories:

KTVU/FOX Evening News with Bob McKenzie

January 2003:
The segment on KTVU with Bob McKenzie highlighted Dr. Robert Rabkin and two of his postoperative patients who have undergone the Duodenal Switch procedure. One postoperative patient, was filmed during a follow up appointment with Dr. Robert Rabkin. During their conversation she described her postoperative success. “I’m feeling so good; you saved my life, you truly did. I can’t explain to you how good I feel. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.”

During a separate interview, Dr. Rabkin stated, “There is nothing else that works for morbid obesity. Surgery is the only modality that works.” He also explained that the Duodenal Switch would eliminate co-morbidities, such as diabetes and sleep apnea, in addition to eliminating obesity.

Another patient was featured in this segment. She said that surgery changed her life. Prior to having the Duodenal Switch, she was morbidly obese and had other co-morbidities. She had to fight her insurance company for six years to obtain authorization for the Duodenal Switch procedure."

In conclusion journalist Bob McKenzie noted, “People who have had the surgery often say later, that they feel as though they unzipped their old body, stepped out of it, and walked away.”

NBC/Entertainment Tonight

December 2002:
The segment on Entertainment Tonight highlighted doctor Robert Rabkin, Dr. John Rabkin, and three sisters who have undergone the Duodenal Switch Procedure.

During this piece, Dr. John Rabkin provided an explanation of how the Duodenal Switch works, with the aid of an instructional diagram. Sisters were interviewed and discussed how losing over 600 lbs. collectively has changed their lives. “Before” and “after” photographs were shown throughout the interview, demonstrating their successes with weight loss surgery.

One of the sisters concluded this segment by stating, “This has been a miracle for our family. We have so much fun now, it’s unbelievable the amount of fun we have!”

KTVU/FOX Morning News

October 2002:
The KRON morning news program featured a story about Gastric Bypass Surgery. Dr. John Rabkin was interviewed, along with a postoperative patient who underwent the Duodenal Switch procedure over three years ago.

During the interview, Dr. Rabkin explained differences among three types of gastric bypass procedures: Gastric Stapling, or Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, and Duodenal Switch procedure.

The patient shared her story, explaining how losing 175 lbs as a result of having the Duodenal Switch Procedure has changed her life. She referred to her weight loss as liberating, and said that it also liberated her family. After researching many procedures, she decided that the DS was the type of surgery that she wanted.

Dr. Rabkin discussed candidacy and clarified that people who are 100lbs or more over their ideal body weight are candidates, as well as obese patients who have co-morbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea. He also noted that insurance companies, in general, would pay for weight loss procedures, especially considering the associated medical problems, which are treated and eliminated as a result of weight loss surgery.

KPIX/Evening Magazine

January 2001/February 2002/February 2003:
KPIX Evening Magazine featured a series of segments highlighting Dr. Robert Rabkin and a few of his patients: “We found a Bay Area doctor who is making miracles happen.”

Evening Magazine first began this series in January 2001, aired a continuation to the story in February 2002, and followed up again in February 2003 with a finale to the series. The segments featured a few different patients who have undergone the Duodenal Switch procedure, tracked patients’ progress, and ultimately, their successes.

One patient described her preoperative experience with weight loss as a “never ending battle” that she fought since childhood. Two years after surgery, this patient had lost 255lbs . One patient claimed, “Dr. Rabkin saved my life.”

These informative pieces provided “before” and “after” photographs of patients and chronicled the experiences of patients as they received the care that they needed. The final piece features one patient who finally felt confident, and, said that before having surgery, spent time hiding behind herself.
