Barbara Metcalf, RN, CBN, Program Director

Barbara Metcalf, RN, CBN, Program DirectorAs Program Director, she is facilitating patient education, monthly group support meetings, and serving as hospital liaison for in-service training and education.

Barbara graduated from nursing school in 1968. Her experience in nursing has involved surgical, respiratory, infectious and general intensive care, coronary care, cardiac cath lab, pediatrics and teaching nutrition at the junior high level. During the time she was raising four children she also coached track and field for many years.

In 1995 she started working with San Francisco bariatric surgeon Dr. Rabkin in Ventura and helped develop our bariatric treatment center in the Bay Area, Pacific Laparoscopy. She has been working with Pacific Laparoscopy in San Francisco since 2000.

She has published on the importance monitoring body fat composition with exercise after duodenal switch procedure. She has presented many times at the national ASBMS meetings on vitamins, nutrition, exercise, group supports and duodenal switch controversies. She is on faculty for the Certification of Bariatric Nurses and recently earned her Certification for Bariatric Nursing as well. She is on Editorial staff for SOARD (Surgery for Obesity and related Diseases) a professional peer reviewed journal. She is a consultant for Ethicon and talks on subjects from Sensitivity Training, Overview of Obesity and Motivating Patients to Exercise. She also helped establish our non-profit organization, Pacific Institute Explorer, whose mission is obesity education and public awareness. She is also on faculty with the American Society of Bariatrics Society, and teaches" DS Nursing ". She presented at International Federation of Surgeons for Obesity and Metabolic Disorder in August 2009.

Maria Manigbas, Physician Assistant

Maria Manigbas, Physician AssistantMaria has recently moved to San Francisco to join Pacific Laparoscopy. She closely follows both the pre- and post-operative patients in the clinic and first assists in the operating room during the surgical procedures.

With a Bachelor of Science degree in Gerontology from the University of Southern California, Maria pursued an advanced degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine ("PCOM") where she received a Masters degree in Health Sciences from the Physician Assistant Program. Upon graduation from PCOM, she obtained further clinical training in New York as a General Surgery Resident at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she worked on a wide variety of surgical procedures.

Upon finishing her surgical residency, Maria moved back to Los Angeles and began her practice working in a primary care clinic. She subsequently expanded her experience over seven years, by working as a Physician Assistant for an Infectious Disease specialist and providing care for hundreds of patients at over 6 different hospitals/medical centers in the Los Angeles area.

Mitra Sayadi, Office Administrator

Mitra Sayadi, Office AdministratorAs Office Administrator of our weight loss surgery center in the Bay Area, Mitra develops and implements office procedures and programs. She oversees daily operations, resolves patients' administrative issues, and supervises the staff. With over 8 years of experience in medical practice management. Mitra joined Pacific Laparoscopy in 2001. She earned her B.A. degree in Biological Science at U.C. Berkeley in 1989 and completed the Multimedia Studies Program at San Francisco State University in 2001.


Matt Williams, Billing Manager

Matt Williams, Billing ManagerMatt acts as a liaison between patients and insurance companies. He handles the insurance authorization process and manages accounts receivables. With an A.S. in Business Administration and three years of prior experience, Matt joined Pacific Laparoscopy in 2002.



Annalyn Carlos, Medical Assistant

Annalyn Carlos, Medical AssistantAs a Medical Assistant, Annalyn records vital signs and reviews lab orders. Annalyn also performs administrative duties including answering phones, coordinating with testing labs and attending to patients. After completing her degree in Medical Assisting from Heald, she began her externship with Pacific Laparoscopy in 2006.
